The only person who can answer that question is YOU! But what I can do is try to help you organize and prioritize your thoughts, expectations, preference(s) and needs. Found almost exclusively in the (sub)tropical regions of the world, in particular Australia and South America, the roughly 410 different species of Psittaciformes (parrots), aka psittacines, are among the most intelligent birds; some with the ability to even imitate human speech.
Parrots, a highly popular and prized pet, come in a wide variety of sizes and colors. There is often very little obvious visual sexual dimorphism (difference between sexes), and virtually all species nest in cavities (in captivity, nest boxes). Seeds, nuts, fruit, plants and sometimes even arthropods (other animal prey) comprise a typical diet.
Each species has its own unique set of advantages, but also challenges. Without a clear understanding of the various drawbacks and benefits, it will be difficult, if not impossible to make the optimal decision. Indeed, even within the same species, one can expect to encounter a range of characteristics and personality traits similar to those found in human beings. Throughout the various stages of growth and development from baby to child to adulthood you can readily witness the maturation process with much of their learning attributed to "social learning," or interactions practiced with parents and siblings.
The superior intelligence of parrots makes them a popular choice of pet, particularly in urban environments, but while they are quick to learn new behaviors, proper care demands sufficient interaction and mental stimulation or screaming, biting, and aggression during hormonal surges will likely result. Parrots, particularly large parrots, are not a low-maintenance pet. Future blog posts will delve deeper into the wonder that is the domesticated passittacine and, hopefully, guide you in making a decision that optimizes not just your needs, but also those of your beloved feathered friend.
